The UK’s New Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): What You Need to Know
The UK is introducing a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for visa-exempt travellers as part of its digital border transformation. Similar to the U.S. ESTA system, the ETA is required for individuals who previously did not need a visa, including those transiting through the UK.
Important: The ETA will also be required for transit passengers passing through UK airports, even if they do not leave the terminal. This is important if you are flying into Dublin Airport and travelling north to Northern Ireland by road to play golf.
Key Details About the UK ETA
- Who Needs It?
The ETA will apply to travellers outside the UK and Ireland who do not require a visa to visit the UK. British and Irish citizens are exempt. - Cost: £10 (GBP) per application
- Validity: An approved ETA allows multiple entries for up to six months within a two-year period (or until the passport expires).
- Timeline:
- January 2025: Mandatory for non-European visa-exempt countries (e.g., Australia, Canada, Japan)
- April 2025: European travellers will also need an ETA.
How to Apply
Applications are submitted online via the UK government website or the official UK ETA app. Applicants will need to provide:
- Passport details
