Strategically placed bunkers, three meandering burns, the beach to the west, and the railway line to the east add to the challenge, while the ever-present breeze off the Firth of Clyde ensures a dynamic playing experience.
Western Gailes is highly ranked among the world’s top golf courses and has a rich tournament history. It has regularly served as a final qualifying venue for The Open Championship at Royal Troon and Turnberry and has hosted prestigious events such as the Curtis Cup and eight Scottish Amateur Championships.
Golf has been played on the West Links at North Berwick since the 17th century, making it one of the world’s oldest and most historic golf courses. Established in 1832, the club continues to offer a unique experience over the same piece of land that has welcomed golfers for centuries.
Set along Scotland’s stunning coastline, the course boasts breathtaking views of the Firth of Forth and its iconic islands, including Bass Rock, Craigleith, Lamb, and Fidra. Combined with the charming backdrop of North Berwick town, few locations rival the scenic beauty and history of this legendary links course.
The West Links is a true championship links course, having hosted prestigious events such as Final Qualifying for The Open Championship and both the Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Amateur Championships. Golfers can expect an excellent test of skill, with a layout that challenges players of all abilities.
Notably, the West Links holds a special place as No. 15 on the Old Tom Morris Trail, honouring its connection to the rich history of Scottish golf.
Situated on the stunning shores of the Moray Firth, Nairn Golf Club is a traditional Scottish links course that seamlessly blends natural beauty with a challenging layout. Founded in 1887, Nairn has evolved into one of Scotland’s best golf courses, attracting golfers of all abilities and hosting numerous prestigious championships over the years.
Created from a Highland wilderness of gorse and heather, the course delivers a true out-and-back links experience. The first six holes along the coast are widely regarded as some of the finest in Scotland, offering breathtaking views and demanding precision. Golf World’s Jock Howard praised Nairn, saying, “The putting surfaces are immaculate, and the variety of the examination never gets boring.”
No. 4 on the Old Tom Morris Trail, Nairn continues to be a highly regarded course in the golfing world. The course has recently undergone significant enhancements under the expert guidance of Mackenzie & Ebert, ensuring it remains a must-play destination for lovers of links golf.
Located on Scotland’s breathtaking Ayrshire coastline, Turnberry Golf is home to two world-class courses: the iconic Ailsa Course and the stunning King Robert the Bruce Course. Offering panoramic views of the Firth of Clyde, the Isle of Arran, and the historic Turnberry Lighthouse, it’s a destination that perfectly blends natural beauty with championship golf.
The Ailsa Course is globally renowned for hosting The Open Championship four times, providing a challenging test with its undulating fairways, deep bunkers, and coastal winds. Meanwhile, the King Robert the Bruce Course offers an equally impressive layout, combining playability with dramatic scenery.

Royal Troon Golf Club, one of Scotland’s finest links courses, hosted the 145th Open Championship in July 2016. This marked the ninth time The Open has been played at Troon, where Henrik Stenson famously lifted the Claret Jug after an epic final-round battle with Phil Mickelson—a performance widely regarded as one of the greatest duels in Open history.
The Old Course at Royal Troon is a true test of links golf and a challenging experience for even the most skilled players. The course demands accurate shot-making, with deep rough, gorse, and broom punishing errant shots. Golfers face an added challenge with the prevailing north-westerly wind, which makes the back nine particularly difficult. In contrast, players are advised to capitalise on scoring opportunities on the outward nine.
The history of Prestwick Golf Club dates back over 160 years to a time when golf was still in its infancy. In 1851, a group of 57 founding members who regularly gathered at the Red Lion Inn made the historic decision to form a golf club. They purchased two cottages opposite the tavern to serve as the club’s first base.
Prestwick holds a unique place in golf’s legacy as the birthplace of The Open Championship. A simple stone cairn located to the west of Prestwick’s iconic clubhouse marks the spot where the very first Open Championship tee shot was struck in 1860. This significant location corresponds to the opening hole of the original 12-hole course, the site where modern golf history began.
Prestwick is also recognised as No. 17 on the Old Tom Morris Trail, celebrating its connection to one of golf’s most influential figures and its role in the development of the sport.
On March 7th, 1744, the Edinburgh Town Council made history by presenting a silver club for annual competition to “The Gentleman Golfers”. Golf has been played at Kingsbarns as early as 1793, making it a site steeped in golfing history. After several decades of use as farmland, the land was restored to its original purpose, reopening as a premier links golf course in July 2000. Despite its relative youth, Kingsbarns quickly earned global recognition, winning the Best New International Course award in its opening year.
Designed by renowned American architect Kyle Phillips in collaboration with co-owner Mark Parsinen—one of the few owner/designer/developers in golf—the course is a par-72 masterpiece. Its unique design features a sculpted two-tier topography, creating a natural amphitheatre effect that provides breath-taking views and enhances the playing experience.
Dumbarnie Links, Scotland’s newest championship golf course, opened in 2020 and has rapidly gained widespread acclaim for its exceptional design, playability, and stunning scenery. Located along the picturesque Firth of Forth, Dumbarnie features 14 holes with scenic vistas of the bay and coastline, providing a truly immersive experience. Several tees and greens are strategically placed near the water, enhancing the course’s visual appeal. The design incorporates three potentially driveable par-4s and multiple holes with risk-and-reward challenges, adding excitement and strategic playability to every round.
The course stretches from 5,300 to 6,900 yards but can be extended to a championship-ready 7,600 yards with additional professional tees. This versatility positions Dumbarnie Links as a prime contender for future major tournaments and professional events.
Carnoustie has hosted some of the most memorable moments in golf history. Major champions like Tom Watson, Padraig Harrington, Paul Lawrie, and Francesco Molinari all claimed their first Major victories at Carnoustie. Legendary golfer Ben Hogan famously played in—and won—his only Open Championship here. Although Hogan was initially unimpressed by Carnoustie’s lack of hills and trees, he quickly learned that a links course presents unique challenges. The test lies in its undulating fairways, strategically positioned greens, rough, and pot bunkers, combined with the ever-present Scottish wind.
Known as the toughest of all Open Championship courses, Carnoustie stretches to a formidable 7,421 yards, making it the longest course in the rotation. As Sir Michael Bonallack once said, “When the wind is blowing, it is the toughest golf course in Britain. And when it’s not blowing, it’s probably still the toughest.”
Stewart Morrison, Managing Director at Bonnie Wee, has recommended Carnoustie as a top course for 2025!

“It’s the most fun I’ve ever had on a golf course!”
Royal Dornoch is also Course No. 2 on the Old Tom Morris Trail, a must-play for those following the legacy of one of golf’s greatest pioneers.
